Let's Talk Babies!

One would think that having another baby would be adventure enough for this year?  Not us, we clearly like to live on the adventurous side. A new baby wasn’t enough adventure for my husband so we are shaking things up a bit and heading down under for 3-4 months.  That’s right ladies and gentleman, in the middle of my pregnancy we are packing up and moving to Australia (temporarily anyway)!!

We don’t know our exact departure date yet as we are waiting on our visa paperwork to be finalized, but sometime next month the three of us will be boarding a plane for a very long flight and heading out on what promises to be a memorable and fun adventure.

So, why exactly are we heading to Australia? For Lorne’s job. It just so happens that Lorne’s employer has an office (several actually) in Australia.  He has been chomping at the bit to get a rotation position over there for years. It just so happened that at the end of last year all the stars aligned and he was offered and accepted a position.  The rotation is supposed to be 6 months long but since I’m pregnant and that would have us out of the country when the baby is due they have agreed to shorten the length of the rotation by a month or so.  Lorne will be in Australia for 4-5 months (depending on when we actually head down) and Maya and I will be there for 3-4 months.

We are super, super excited.  And, although, the idea of traveling that far away from home while pregnant is a bit nerve-wracking it is not an opportunity we can pass up and it is taking place during the perfect time in my pregnancy.  I’ve already found an obstetrician to work with while I’m in Australia so I’m all set there.

The next few weeks to a month are going to be very busy for us while we figure out where we will be living, finalize the details of our travel arrangements and figure out just what we need to bring with us.  Busy, busy, busy.

Not exactly looking forward to the ridiculously long flights, especially the one on the way home where I will be traveling alone with a 3 year old while 32 weeks pregnant!! But, hey what can you do, right.  I am looking forward to leaving our winter weather for the lovely summer and fall weather of Brisbane, Australia.  I am looking forward to exploring what appears to be a beautiful city in a country I’ve always wanted to go to.  I am looking forward to taking a million pictures and sharing all our adventures with all of you.

Hey Lisa – finally catching up on all your adventures to come. I have so many friends in Australia that I made while living in London and although it’s one of the only places in the world I haven’t managed to get to, it is beautiful I believe. I think it’s a great adventure for you and for Maya, my children have benfited immensely from the travel we’ve done over the years.

Just wanted to reassure you that you will be fine on the trip. I made my first trip to SA (21 hours from here) with Micaela when she was almost 9 weeks old. I did it again when she was 22 months old (a little harder) and made several trips to Ireland, Holland and London when she was three and four. Made the trip to SA again when B was three and a half and she was eight. He was more challenging than she was – but both of them are amazingly good on long trips because I’ve always had a good, positive attitude and just gone with the flow. Easier said than done, I’ve done all the trips solo, P never came on any of them. Just ask for help though, the airports are usually more than willing if you ask and will usually accomodate you.

What I learnt over time : Don’t pack too much – you can buy anything you forgot at the other end.
Bring little toys and new books etc on the flight – godsend.
I bought a little portable DVD which has been everywhere over the years and is great for putting in a movie you like or they like.
Travel light – it pays in the end. You always need a lot less than you think, esp if the weather will be nice on the other end.
Don’t get on the plane first when they board – let Maya run around till the last minute – or you’ll only have another 30 minutes or so tagged onto the long flight time to sit in a small space. I learnt this one the hard way. : )

Have fun and good luck. It will be stressful at times, but just ignore the people who glare – they are always those and for the most part people are very tolerant.

I wish you luck and love on your travels, hope you’ll be updating us.

    Tricia : ) x
