Let's Talk Babies!

It is amazing to me how many different shoe options there are out there for babies.  Babies don’t even need shoes.  It can be cute to add them to an outfit for pictures but really it is better for your child’s growing feet to just be in a pair of socks.  Skip the shoes for now.

So when does your baby need shoes?  When he begins to walk he’ll be ready for his first pair of shoes.  Going bare foot when it is safe to do so is still a good idea though.  Going bare foot allows him to gain more control and muscle tone in his legs and feet.  Also, he’ll be pretty fascinated by the different sensations under foot.  He’ll probably get a kick out of the first time he walks on grass in his bare feet.

What should you look for in a good shoe?

  • Be sure the shoe fits your child well.  You don’t want it too small or too big.  Bring your child along when shopping for shoes so she can try them on.
  • Choose shoes that are light weight and breathable.
  • Make sure the sole is flexible and has good grip.
  • Let your child walk around in the shoes at the store for a few minutes.  If you notice any irritated spots on his foot don’t by the shoe (it isn’t the right shoe for him).  Don’t expect him to break the shoe in, just find a different size or style.

If you have any concerns about your child’s feet be sure to address these with your pediatrician.  A foot exam is not usually part of the normal physical check up are routine visits so you’ll have to bring it up.

One Response to Babies and Shoes

These are very good tips for buying shoes for babys. Over here in germany baby shoes are a real good thing, especially for the winter time i wouldn`t miss them! We have really cold floors in our house and it`s good when you take a long walk at winter time, so your baby doesn`t have to wear them for hours necessarily…
Somehow our baby never had a cold because we bought some soft soled babyshoes that fit and are good for a could floor.
That was a really good investment on the healthy side of life!
