Suddenly when you become a mother poop takes on a whole new meaning and you find yourself inspecting your baby’s poop, talking about your baby’s poop, and researching baby poop to make sure what you find in the diaper is normal. I never would have imagined when I was younger that one day I would be inspecting the contents of my child’s diaper let alone researching and writing an article on baby poo.
The reason for this weird obsession we moms get over our baby’s poop is that we can learn a lot about what is going on with our babies based on what is going on in their diapers. Often the first sign of illness or a problem can be found in the diaper. It can also provides good reassurance that everything is fine, your baby is healthy, and getting plenty of nutrition.
When you first come home with your new little one it is hard to know what is normal and what is not. The nurses in the hospital and the teacher of your prenatal class (if you took one) will try to explain to you what you can expect in your child’s diaper. You can also ask your pediatrician in the early visits. But when it comes right down to it you will still likely worry if what you see is normal or not. Over the first weeks of your baby’s life you will get to know what is normal for your child and be able to recognize when something is wrong.
So what is normal in the early weeks and months? The contents of your baby’s diaper will change over the first few days of your child’s life and again a few months later and then again when you introduce solids. What you find in your baby’s diaper will vary depending on if you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding.
Meconium: This is the black, sticky, almost tar like bowel movements your child takes in his first few days after birth. Your child swallowed a lot of amniotic fluid while in utero, the result is meconium. It can be difficult to wipe off your baby’s bottom due to its sticky consistency but don’t worry in a couple of days you’ll be on to the next kind of poop.
Breastfed Babies: Once your child has passed all the meconium and feeding has been well established you will begin to find bright yellow or mustard colored grainy poop that is loose in consistency. In the early weeks your child will likely take a bowel movement at every feeding, or almost every feeding. Once she gets a little bigger and you are on more of a schedule you will find that she takes less bowel movements. Most babies will take 3-4 bowel movements each day, often on a bit of a schedule. This routine will continuously change as your baby gets older and her body is better able to absorb more of what she takes in. Some breastfed babies eventually can go several days without taking a bowel movement. It is important to get to know what is normal for your baby so you can recognize when something is amiss.
Bottle-fed Babies: The color and consistency of the poop passed by a bottle-fed baby is different than that of a breastfed baby. You will find your baby’s bowel movements are pale yellow or a yellowish brown color and are more solid and formed. This is a result of the formula not be as well absorbed in the digestive system as breast milk. Also, you will find that bottle fed babies produce a pretty pungent smelling poop. Bottle-fed babies often need to pass at least one bowel movement every day so that their systems don’t get backed up. Again, it is important to get to know your baby’s routine so that you can recognize when something isn’t right.
Once you introduce solids things in the diaper will change again. Your baby’s poop will be more solid as they are taking in less fluids than before and will be greatly affected by what they eat. Peas will produce green poop. You will also find the smell changes. This may be particularly troubling for a mom used to the sweeter smell of a breastfed baby’s poop.
So what isn’t normal and a sign that it’s time to give the pediatrician a call?
Diarrhea: It can be hard to recognize diarrhea since a baby’s poop is fairly loose to begin with. You will notice a change in the consistency with the stool becoming more runny. There is often a change in the color as well. Breastfed babies are less likely to suffer from diarrhea than bottle-fed babies as breast milk helps fight off bacteria. If your baby has diarrhea call your pediatrician to find out what they recommend and if you need to bring the baby in to get checked out.
Constipation: If your baby is constipated you will find she has trouble passing her stool, it is harder and pellet like in consistency, and is often accompanied by a tight tummy, abdominal pain and fussiness. Again, breastfed babies are less likely than bottle-fed babies to suffer from constipation. If you think your baby is constipated take her in to see the pediatrician.
Green Poop: If your baby had green, frothy poop it is likely caused by too much lactose. This can happen when your baby feeds often but not long enough on one breast to get the rich hind milk. There is more lactose in the fore milk. It is important to let your baby finish on the first breast before offering her the other breast. The green poop can also be a sign of a stomach bug. If it persists longer than 24 hours you should head into the pediatrician to have your baby checked out.
Bloody Stool: If your baby is constipated you may find blood in her stool, which is caused by too much straining. It can also be a sign of many other illnesses and problems. If you ever find blood in your baby’s stool call your pediatrician. Your baby will need to be checked out to find out what is causing the bloody stool.
Over time you will become familiar with what is normal for your baby. You will recognize what a normal bowel movement looks like, the normal frequency of her bowel movements, and when something appears to be amiss. If you have questions or concerns about your baby’s bowel movements be sure to consult your pediatrician. Don’t worry we all obsess over the contents of our baby’s diaper, it is part of being a good, conscientious parent.

Patricia,
There are seeds in the poop or the poop itself is seed-like? If there are seeds in the poop and it is dark it could be something she ate. If you are saying she has dark, hard, seed-like poop than it sounds like she may be constipated. To help with constipation you can try giving her some prunes or prune juice.
If your baby is young like in the first 3 months of life on the outside, seedy/pommery mustard type poop is totally NORMAL!
Gross, but normal!
Hi! Its me again… Nothing change to my niece poop routine. Every time she eats after 1 hour she poop immediately. Her mom said, the color of her poop is color black. It starts when she start solid foods. Is it normal?
Jess,
I would recommend that her mom talk to her pediatrician. Black poop is usually not normal and could be a sign of a food allergy, a blockage, or some other issue.
It is really good to see people going over child care and infant concerns alot more regularly as of late. Thanks for the blog post, I spotted it on yahoo.
My baby is 7 weeks old and he has been recently pooping really dark green-almost black. The poop has a foul smell and he is both breast fed and given formula(Enfamil Premium Lipil.)I am worried because he only poops once a day, a lot when he does so, when before he pooped more times. Help!
Kathy,
Have you mentioned this to your son’s doctor? You may want to just to be safe. It is normal for some babies to change their poop schedule and start going once a day, and sometimes even less frequently. Formula fed babies also often have smellier poops than strictly breastfed babies. Given the color and the foul smell I would definitely mention it to his doctor.
my baby’s poop is hard and like poop of the goat…which is tiny and hard…is it normal? she is mix feeding (formula and breastfeed) she is already eight months and going to nine on april 24….please reply in my email account..
thank you and god bless..more power
Hi,
My baby is 7 months old, fully breastfeed and I’ve given him solid when he was 5 months. His poop is always greenish and he poops once a week even after he started solid. Is it normal?
pls reply in my email, thanks
Ellie,
It is possible for a baby to go only once or twice a week. Although not common it can be normal if that is normal for the baby and there isn’t any sign that something is wrong, like struggling to go, hard, pelt like poops. Have you ever mentioned this to his doctor? If not I definitely would just to be sure everything is okay.
i have a huge question my son mason will poop like every four days and when he does it is sometimes really hard or tar-ish or really liquidy. we have asked the doctor but they dont seem to care.. and to unconstipate him we gave him prunejuice and it made it worse.. anymore ideas. email me please
My daughter is almost 6 weeks old, she is mix feeding, and doesn’t poop everyday, which I know is fairly normal. She’s been taking solid poops lately though, is taking only solid poops normal for an infant her age? She stopped having the seed like, runny poops at about 4 weeks.
Gloria,
I would guess it probably depends on the child and on her diet. Typically a baby will keep the runnier, seedy bowel movements until solids are introduced. However, all babies are different and typically as long as they are not straining or having difficulty going than everything is usually fine. I would recommend mentioning it at your child’s next well baby visit just to be sure.
Hello,
My 2 month old is pooping 4-5 maybe even 6 times a day. He is on Gerber good start formula the orange can. His poops are yellow runny and a little bit seedy. Should I go see his doctor?
Tiffany,
That sounds pretty normal for a baby that age. If you are worried about it though be sure to bring it up at your child’s next well baby visit to be sure everything is fine.
I have been feeding my 6 and a half month old plain white porridge for a few days. He is also fully breastfed. Strangely he had runny green poop. Is it something I ate that is causing it? Or could it be caused by the fact that he is licking everything around him?
Hi, My 14mnth daughter had peas sweetcorn and carrots yesterday for dinner at 530pm and has only just digested the food today at 330pm i noticed it in whole chunks in her nappy! She always takes this long to digest the food is this normal?
hi my daughter is 7 weeks and for the past two days she has had a blue colour to her poo mixed with her normal yellow poo,is this normal?
Heather,
It could be something you ate affecting her bowel movements, but I would definitely mention it to her doctor just to be safe.
hi my 6 month old daughter has started on solids im a first tme father and not sure what is normal she has recently done a solid poop not very big but fairly solid i was just wondering if that is normal also their was a little blood just a little concerned thats all im not sure if thats suppose to happen
Christopher,
It is normal for a baby’s bowel movements to change when they begin solids. As their bodies get used to digesting the new foods it can cause diarrhea or constipation. The blood could be from the solid bowel movement causing irritation as it was coming out. I would recommend watching her bowel movements. If she continues to have trouble consider introducing a different cereal such as oatmeal that is less likely to cause constipation. You can also introduce prunes or prune juice to help keep things moving well. Good luck, this is a fun age.
my baby is 3 days old and her poo is mustard yellow with seedish stuff in it , is this normal ?
Kylie,
That sounds about right for a newborn. You’ll come to recognize what is normal for your daughter and when something is off in no time.
My baby is about to be 2 months and her poop is a dark green at first it was like a mustard color but for the past 3 days her poop has been a dark green and very loose is it normal….
Emma,
I would recommend calling your baby’s doctor to discuss the bowel movements you are seeing. Some breastfed babies will experience this if they are not getting enough of the rich hind milk. It can also be caused by something you ate, a digestion issue or a bowel obstruction.
My first baby is 4 days old, and he poops quite often during the day. The colour is normal, but his poops are always quite small. I am just wondering if I should be expecting larger amounts in his diapers…??
Jessie,
The first weeks are about learning what is normal for your baby, including what is normal for his bowel movements. As long as the consistency, color, etc seem normal and he isn’t struggling or appearing to be constipated he is probably fine. Mention any concerns you have to his doctor at his next check up.
my baby is 13weeks and poops every 3 to 4 days his stool is thick and dark green and very pundnant. dr said he is constipated and to use a thermometer but lately he has been fine and goes on his own. he is on similac sensitive isomil soy. is any of this normal? he is also sleeping alot more than usual. he had thrush and i cannot tell if it is gone. he eats 6 ounces normally and sometimes will only eat 3. idk what to do….
steph
Stephanie,
I would definitely take him into the doctor to be sure the thrush was gone. If constipation persists the doctor can prescribe a stool softener. It may be normal for him not to go every day but having sticky, pungent and dark green stool is a sign of a problem.
hi my son is nearly 2 and he poops alot upto 6 times a day is this normal??
Kirsty,
Every child will develop their own “normal”. If he always has bowel movements like that than perhaps that is his normal. However, if it appears to be affecting his growth, or he is getting dehydrated as a result I would recommend discussing it with his doctor.
Hi,
My 7 week old baby has been having metalic navy blue poops… she only drinks formula so she hasn’t eaten anything blue… and its not greenish at all its very blue and shiny… should i be concerned?
Heather,
I would definitely give her doctor a call.
Hello,
My 10 month old granddaughter recently had her formula changed from Similac to Good Start. Since then, she has been having multiple bowel movements daily and they sometimes overflow her diaper. They smell really horrible too. Has anyone ever heard of this? We are afraid she will get dehydrated, but for now she seems to be okay.
Kathy,
It could just be her body adjusting to the new formula. If it keeps up I would contact her doctor and find out if there is anything you need to do or if the formula should be changed again.
My baby is 3 mnths and as soon as she is finished eating she a bowel movement. It is yellow/green seedy. She eats both. So its like 4 or more bowel movements a day. Is this normal
Fanchon,
That sounds about normal for a baby that age. As her digestive system continues to mature and once solids are introduced things will start to change again. But, for now, that sounds about normal.
my son is 5 months old he had a bad cold and is teething as well his poo has gone a bright yellow and is being introdueced to food, his cold has gone and his teethings died down but he still has really loose yellow poo that sometimes when he farts some poo comes out as well plz tell me is this normal or should i stop his food until his poos gone back to normal
Claire,
It could be from his food. I would watch it for a couple of days and if it doesn’t clear up I would give his doctor a call.
My baby is almost six weeks old. He recently started having very dark green (like spinach or darker) and sticky stools. He has had two of them. He has been exclusively breastfed. Normally his stools are very runny and a yellow or yellow-orange. I was just at the Dr this morning because he is gassy and fussy and spits up a lot. This green poop thing had to happen as soon as i left, of course. I am so worried.
Jessica,
My daughter got green poop when she wasn’t getting enough hind milk, the richer milk at the end. My doctor recommended switching to breastfeeding only on a one breast per session and it worked. I would recommend giving his doctor a call just to advise them of the green poop, especially since you had him in there for being gassy and fussy. They may have some recommendations or a new diagnosis for you based on the new info.
My 2/5 daughter has 5 to 6 bowel movement in a day and she is breast feeding, is that normal?
my daughter is going to be 15 months old in 10 days. the past week or so she has been havin loose stools. went to her doctor today and he examined her hiney and he said that it has a fishy smell wish i am not completely sure but i think he is wrong. because i have been smelling her poop since she started this loose stool. it smells stronger but i dont sense and fish smell. he also said she could have some type of virus. not sure what he was trying to say because his accent is extremely heavy. any advice or suggestions for me please?
Georgia,
If you are unsure about the doctor’s diagnosis I would recommend a second opinion. At that age there are many things that can cause loose stool. Dehydration can occur with extended loose stool so be sure she is getting plenty of fluids and you may want to use some electrolyte rich fluids like pedialyte. Also, be sure she is eating a bland diet to prevent stomach and bowel irritation until you are able to get a good diagnosis and get the loose stool to stop.
I am having a problem! Hopefully someone knows the answer. My 10month old son has had a runny nose for a few days and has been miserable which is not common for him. Pretty sure he has teeth coming in at the bottom (he has none yet) so we assumed that is cause. But lastnight he pooped and it smelled SOOOOOOOO bad like rotten eggs..and it was green and kinda runny. You think that could still b teething or something else? He hasnt pooped again yet since lastnight…but he been SUPER fussy today. HELP! Thank you!!!
Donna,
It is possible it is from the teething. With all the extra saliva produced during teething and the fact that it is more acidic than normal it can cause runny poops. I would recommend giving his doctor a call and maybe talking to the nurse on staff to see if they think it is just teething or if maybe he has a virus or something, just to be safe.
My baby is 7 weeks old and is mostly breastfed with a daily bottle of formula. It seems like she poops all the time, after every feeding and sometimes in between feedings. Some are more runny than others. They’re mostly mustard yellow but some of them are greenish. I’m more concerned about the frequency than the color. Is it normal for her to have 6-8 poopy diapers a day?
Danielle,
It is normal for a newborn, especially a breastfed baby, to have a bowel movement after every feeding or even more often. The greenish poop could be a sign that she isn’t getting enough of the hind milk when breastfeeding. I would mention it to her doctor and see what they advise you to do.
My three month old breastfeed baby used to poop once a day. Two days ago he started having more than 4 bowel movements a day. Today his poops are so runny and sticky like mucus with no white seeds in it. Is this diarrhea or something worse? Pls advise.
Lakshmi,
I does sound like he may have diarrhea or some other issue. It is normal for the number of times a day to change as your child’s digestive system matures and then again as new foods are introduced. However, really runny and/or sticky bowel movements can be a sign of an illness or allergy or something else. I would recommend calling his doctor.
