Let's Talk Babies!

Think you might be pregnant? If you have started experiencing some early symptoms and you have missed your period you just might be. Most women will experience some changes and early signs of pregnancy before their missed period. However, just like with everything else, each woman is different and each pregnancy is different, which means some woman may not experience any early signs of pregnancy at all.

Here are a few of the early signs of pregnancy. You may experience all, some, or none of these symptoms. All of these symptoms can also be signs of other health issues so be sure to talk to your doctor if you have these symptoms but have ruled out pregnancy.

  • The most common early symptom, and the one most woman look for to tell them they are pregnant, is a late or missed period. If your cycle is fairly regular a missed period is often the first indication that you may be pregnant. For women who have irregular cycles you may experience some of the other symptoms before you realize your period is late.
  • About 6-12 days after implantation some women experience light bleeding known as implantation bleeding. It can sometimes be mistaken as a light period. Not all women will experience this bleeding, but if you do it can be an early sign of pregnancy. It will likely take other symptoms before you realize you may be pregnant.
  • Within the first couple of weeks after conception many women begin to feel swelling and tenderness of their breasts. You will notice your breasts becoming sore and tender to the touch and may notice a change in their size. It can vary from woman to woman on when you will experience this symptom but it can be as early as 1 week after conception.
  • Beginning very early, as early as 1 week after conception, you may begin to notice you are exhausted all the time. Being tired or exhausted is a common early sign of pregnancy, but again alone may not be enough for you to notice, but in combination with other early symptoms may be a sign you are pregnant.
  • One of the most common symptoms of pregnancy, morning sickness, sets in fairly early in pregnancy. It varies widely from woman to woman, and some women may not experience morning sickness at all. On average morning sickness will set in about 2-8 weeks after conception. Along with a missed period this is one of the most common symptoms women look for to tell them they are pregnant.
  • A few other early symptoms include increased sensitivity to odors, headaches, backaches frequent urination and abdominal bloating.

The only proof of pregnancy is a positive pregnancy test. If you experiencing any of these early signs of pregnancy and think you may be pregnant now would be a good time to take a home pregnancy test, and make an appointment to see your doctor.

Be sure to talk to your doctor if you have questions or concerns about the symptoms you are experiencing, particularly if you have ruled out pregnancy as the cause.

  • Rami,

Congratulations!! I would call your doctor’s office and see when they would like to see you. I saw my doctor a few days after taking the home pregnancy test, but I know some doctors wait longer than that.

Best of luck with your pregnancy.

  • lindie says:

I am 17 and a senior in high school my boyfriend and I hardly ever have unprotected sex but, we just recently did on the 4th and I think i am pregnant my period isnt due until the end of the month i think but i am always tierd and i always have aches and pains in my stomache almost like craps from your period, but theres nothing. I havent taken a pregnancy test because i am waiting to see if i get my period. Is there any other way i can tell if i am prego?

  • Lindie,

The only way to know for sure is to take a pregnancy test. Your best bet is to wait until you can take a test.

  • lindie says:

Ok well I took a home pregnancy test and it came up Negative, but i still dont feel good. Should I take another test?

  • Lindie,

You could, but I would recommend going to your doctor. That way, if it isn’t pregnancy they can help you figure out what may be causing your symptoms.

  • M0NikA says:

    can i be preg.

  • Monika,

It is unlikely you were experiencing pregnancy symptoms that soon after having unprotected sex. However, given that you had unprotected sex then there is a chance you are pregnant. I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test.

  • M0NikA says:

HE kAME iN Mi 2TiMES i THiNk iM N0T SURE. S0 i WiLL MAkE SURE T0 TAkE A PREGNANCY TEST BUT iF i AM PREGNANT i SH0ULD BE LikE 3WEEKS ALREADi.

  • Monika,

It completely depends on the person. Some people get symptoms very early, others don’t until well after their first missed period. Your best bet is to talk to a doctor.

  • Ella says:

Hey my name is Ella and see me and my bf matt had unprotected sex for like 5 hours and we were fooling around and stuff and then he like pushed so hard in me that i thought i felt something and i look down and he has cumed in me and everywhere. Now my friends tell me that if we didnt use protection and that he cumed that i am pregnet and right now im confused cuz about 1 week and 2 days later i had my period and my friends and others told me that i can still have my period and be pregnet so can you help me im confused i need advise thanks…

  • Ella,

It is possible to get pregnant any time you have unprotected sex, although it is not guaranteed to happen every time. It is also possible to have what you think is your period even if you are pregnant, it is called implantation bleeding. I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test or going to your doctor for a blood test, that way you’ll know for sure.

  • Amanda says:

I’ve been visiting my boyfriend for a week and we’ve had sex quite a bit. I never let him finish without a condom on even if we start without one. Now I’m a week late, I’m more tired than usual, and my nipples are darker and painfully sensitive. My boobs get kinda sore right before my period but never my nipples. I’m buying a test tonight to make sure, but I’m still really worried. Is there a better explanation for what’s wrong?

  • Amanda,

I would recommend talking a home pregnancy test. If it is negative than make an appointment with your doctor so you can find out what else may be wrong.

  • Jennifer says:

I had a period jan 14-20th and had sex on the 21st. The condom broke and he had ejaculated inside of me. 2 hours later I took Plan B and the second tablet was taken a little over an hour late. 6 days later I’m experiencing light bleeding. I don’t understand how it could be another period. How fast can an egg become fertilized and attached? and is there a chance it could be implantation bleeding? Is it possible to get pregnant within the short time frame before I took plan B?

  • Jennifer,

It may be a side effect of the Plan B, I would ask a pharmacist or a doctor what the side effects are. It is unlikely you became pregnant given you had just had your period and likely had not ovulated yet, but not impossible. If you miss your period and think you may be pregnant I would take a home pregnancy test.

  • Nicole says:

I used plan B at the beginning of the month because the condom slipped off. Now at the end of the month the condom slipped off again but we decided not to use plan B since we are getting married and we figure if it happens it happens. The point is now my period is late by 3 days, I think it is too early to have an accurate HPT since conception would have been 6 days ago.

  • Nicole,

I would recommend talking to your doctor to see when you can test for pregnancy. It probably is too early now.

  • amber says:

hi my name is amber i just need an opinion me and my bf been together for 5 years. the other day he __ in me and it was on my most fertile day 3/3/2009. now im feeling queasy, and tired its not due for my period. but it feels like a change !!

  • Amber,

It is probably a little early to feel any symptoms, but some women claim to feel pregnancy symptoms within a few days. Your best bet is to wait and see what happens. If your period is late then take a home pregnancy test. When you are trying to get pregnant it can be hard to wait I know!

  • tina says:

Im not sure how old these post are:)
Im also 3days late, I had m/c on27th jan have had normal af since on the 23rd, but now im late, im not sure why or if my cycle would just change after having normal period,
I do have sore and swollen breast trips to the loo, and small cramp but no period not a spot….but negitive test when two days late???

With my last pregnancy i didnt get positive till i had bloods done and then followed by positive hpt @17dpo, 5days late…

    But sadly ended @11wks5days:((

    Any answers greatly appreciated:)

  • Tina,

I would recommend waiting a little bit longer and testing again if you still don’t get your period. If still negative at that time I would recommend seeing your doctor for a blood test and to discuss what else may cause your symptoms if you are not pregnant.

Best of luck to you. I hope all works out for you this time.

  • caroline says:

me and my boyfriend just recently had sex…on the 13th of march… and he didnt use a condom.. about two days later i had really bad diarraha and i threw up… my breast are not sore i had a really bad headache the other day and im bloating… i dont really have to pee alot. but i have been tired and sleepy alot. am i pregnant ?

  • Caroline,

Your best bet is to wait until your period, if it doesn’t arrive then take a home pregnancy test. Early pregnancy symptoms are not good indicators of whether someone is actually pregnant or not, you have to test to find out for sure.

  • BabyGurl says:

    Help please.
I had “dry sex” but without clothes on with my boyfriend. this happened 4times almost 2weeks ago, he ejaculated on & around my vigina.iv been on the pill for 3years.. and i never have a break. sometimes i forget to take it for more than 12hours. i have cramping in my stomach, headaches (which i never get), feel tired, bloated and even feeling sick when i wake up ( never been sick tho ). I took a pregnancy test on thursday and it was negitive. Does anyone think im pregnant, or is it in my head.?

  • BabyGurl,

It is unlikely that you are pregnant since you are on the pill and he didn’t ejaculate inside of you. However, if you do miss your period I would try testing again at that time.

  • Lucy says:

    Hi,
I was just after some advice. I have recently come off the Mirena (only just over a month ago) had some bleeding the first couple of days and then had, what I thought was the start of a period about 12 days ago. This only lasted a couple of days. Since I was on the Mirena for a couple of years and didn’t have periods, I am a bit confused as to where my cycle is. I have taken a test a week or so ago which was negative. I am just wondering if you know the following. Is it likely that pregnancy symptoms (that I am having ) could be caused by coming off the Mirena and how likely would it be to actually be preg so soon after the removal

  • Lucy,

It is possible the symptoms you are experiencing are from going off Mirena. It usually takes several months for your cycle to become regular. I would wait a little bit, if you still think you may be pregnant then test again. You could also go to your doctor to see what he/she thinks.

  • lisa says:

me and my bf is havin sex 4 a month now i strart to havin frequent urination and i think i might b pregant but that is de only syptoms i gettin i might b three weeks pregant so i want to know if it;s impossible to be

  • plummzzzzz says:

hi i need some answer i think i am three weeks pregant cause i am havin bad feelin and frequent urination

  • Lisa,

I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test if you think you might be pregnant. You may want to see if you miss your period first though.

  • lindie says:

Do you have to be ovulating to get pregnant?

  • Lindie,

Yes. In order to get pregnant you have to produce an egg. If you are not ovulating than your ovaries are not releasing an egg during your cycle. No egg, no pregnancy.

  • Theresa says:

Hello! I’m 32 years old, tired get pregnant first time mom to be, I have missed my peroid, last March 30, I had went to the doctor March 23, I was having painful urination and peeing blood. She diagnosis with a bladder infection, give me antibotic for bladder and neg preg urine test, and then I had a doctor appointment with my GYN-doc and he give me an antibotic too just in case for yeast infection. I also have hypothyroidism and take a pregnancy (urine) and it was neg.I have an appointment to see a Fertility Specialist this week. Is it possible I’m pregnant? With a neg urine test. My peroids are very normal and on time. I hope I am.

  • Theresa,

Urine pregnancy tests are fairly accurate, especially when administered by a medical professional. That being said there is always the possibility of a false negative. I would talk to the fertility specialist, they may do a blood test to get a more accurate reading. Good luck to you.

  • Tertia says:

I have been using the petogen injection for two years and stopped using it 20 days ago. Is it possible for me to fall pregnant so quickly after i stopped the injection. I have had light spotting and experience back ache and even nausea.

  • Tertia,

It is possible, but highly unlikely. In most cases it takes several months for your cycle to return to normal and for you to ovulate. The symptoms you are experiencing could just be your body’s reaction to being off the injection. I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test if you miss your period. You could also call your doctor and find out what symptoms to expect when you go off the injection to see if that is what you are experiencing.

  • deya says:

Anytime you have unprotected sex there is a chance of becoming pregnant. I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test.

  • Private miss says:

hello, last month i was 2 weeks late for my period, then i had 2 days of light pink spotting, this month i was 3 weeks late and had 2 days of light pink spotting again. • Private miss,

I would recommend taking another pregnancy test or going to see you doctor for a blood test. If those are negative you should talk to your doctor about what else may be causing your symptoms.

  • T.L.M says:

My daughter had sex with her bf on June 26 and July 11. she started her period on June 21,but only went 3 days. what day could she have conceived?

  • TLM,

It totally depends on her cycle.

  • Emmiee says:

I had sex with my bf but the condom slipped out right before he came. I took Plan B 20 hours later. I had no symptoms while using plan B. could i be prego?

  • Eliese says:

I took my plan B pill 20 min late could that affect me getting pregnant?

Also i dont get my period regulary anymore so when would be the best time to take a pregnancy test?

  • Karen says:

I took My plan B with soda and fast food (checkers) would that affect the way the plan B worked?

  • Emmiee,

It is possible. If you think you might be pregnant I would recommend taking a home pregnancy test.

  • Eliese,

I would test when you think you should be getting your period or if you start to experience pregnancy symptoms.

  • Karen,

No that should not affect to plan B. Anytime you have questions about a medication or how to take it you should always ask your pharmacist.
